Jamaica is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean for scenery. The island has white-sand beaches, lush foliage, rivers, mountains and spectacular waterfalls. Watersports are quite popular and you’ll often find a variety of them being done along Jamaica’s coastlines. Snorkeling and scuba diving are long time favourites but increasingly windsurfing and kiteboarding are also becoming popular. Kiteboarding is a sport whose practitioners attach themselves to kite-like sails and skim over the water on boards. Windsurfing lets you catch some waves in a whole new way. If you’ve never before experienced this dramatic water sport, there’s no better place to begin than here. Most of the large beach hotels in Jamaica have a good selection of watersports equipment on hand for use, usually free of charge (mostly for non-motorised sports) and will direct you to the best spots for these activities, this includes windsurfing and kiteboarding. However, if you’re not planning on relying on the resorts it is suggested that you bring your own equipment. Mainly located along the north shore, between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Kiteboarding season in the Caribbean is generally from November to April (which makes this list just in time), although favorable winds can continue into the summer months when the winds blow at a constant 15-20 knots. Often winds tend to be lighter in the mornings – and consequently good for beginners – and then to pick up to a good pace in the afternoon. It goes to its maximum by night. The waters are so warm you will not require a wet suit.

Silver Sands

The gated community of Silver Sands in Trelawny has one of the most beautiful beaches in Jamaica. Many locals and repeat visitors regard Silver Sands as the spot with the best conditions for those serious about the sport. The community is located just a 30 min drive east of Montego Bay and consists of villas and cottages. Silver Sands offers villas of all sizes with a cook and house keeping included. Windsurfing and kitesurfing at Silver Sands is great for intermediate to advanced sailors. The wind often gets too strong and the water too choppy for all but intermediate and advanced sailors though it is possible to learn here with dedication and proper instruction.

Montego Bay

Montego Bay is famous for it’s turquoise waters it’s Marine Park and its pulsating night life. There are a few nice sandy beaches here for windsurfing and kiteboarding like Cornwall Beach, Doctors Cave Beach, and Walter Fletcher Beach. The first one is near all the major hotels in the area. There is also a cove shared by Riu Hotel and Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort. This cove is very shallow and protected by a long stretch of coral reef.

Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is 1 1/2 hours east from Montego Bay. This city is a cruise ship capital and bay accomodates many hotels and all inclusive resorts. The beaches are beautiful and the conditions are ideal for windsurfing and kiteboarding. The Beaches gere include the Reggae Beach, James Bond Beach, Mallards Beach, Mahogany Beach and Puerto Seco Beach.

Negril

Warm in the winter or the summer, this island retreat in the resort town of Negril is a relaxing place to soak in the sun and scenery. It is about an hour west from Montego Bay and has a reputation for it’s Seven Mile Beach, breathtaking cliff diving and nude sunbathing. This is a great area to try windsurfing and kiteboarding, while launches from Montego Bay can be tricky, but not that difficult if you have a little help; Negril’s launches are great.

Burwood Beach, Falmouth

There are also great winds at Burwood beach just along from the Breezes Hotel in Falmouth, Trelawny. The waters are warm and shallow and ideal for beginners to learn at their own pace. Clear small waves, larger waves out at the reef. Sandy bottom. You can walk out for at least 100m.
