Event Update: Reggae Sumfest 2011: Dancehall Night

Dancehall night (July 21, 2011) at this year’s staging of Reggae Sumfest was choc full of explosive perfomances, surprize guest appearances and crowd-pleasing stage antics from Jamaica’s Dancehall fraternity. Music lovers from all across the globe showed up in large numbers hungry for thrills and they were not disappointed.

Dancehall diva’s Tifa, Spice and Cecile were among the night’s favourite female performers. Tifa’s entrance (which saw the artist emerging from a giant ‘gift-wrapped’ box) was of particular interest. Her attitude-pacekd performance also saw an appearance from Fambo for a performance of their hit “Swaggin’”. Spice, who also had a surprize in store, was joined by R&B hit-maker Mya for the debut of their spanking new single.

Among the night’s best male performers were Khago, who’s entrance was met with fireworks from the crowd. I-Octane, who’s fans took it a step further and brought torches into play (and for a while what seemed like a permanent flame smack dab in the center of the audience). Kiprich followed with a humourous and entertaining set, which featured hilarious appearances by the dancers “Zombie” and “Fluffy Minaj”. Konshens had some socially conscious lyrics for the crowd and some stuff for the ladies as well.

The “Energy God” Elephant Man, clad in a “Captain America” inspired outfit (equipped with the trademark shield) also brought the fireworks and lived up to his usual standard of energetic antics which involved climbing up on the side of the stage to get a better view of the hundreds of people in the audience. After an impressive set by Agent Sasco (formerly known as Assassin) it was time for “The Warlord” Bounty Killer to take the stage. Beenie Man followed with an explosive set that included guest appearances by Jamaica’s viral internet sensation Clifton “Cliftwang” Brown, Fambo and Mya.

More horns blaring and torches blazing throughout Mavado’s performance during which the Deejay removed items of his clothing (namely his jacket, shirt and shoes) as well as jewelery and threw them into the crowd.
Man of the moment Vybz Kartel took the stage at around sunrise and wowed the crowd with a performance that included appearances by various members of his “Portmore Empire”. Patrons thoroughly enjoyed this year’s Dancehall segment and are excited what International Night’s 1 and 2 have in store.
