Vacation Themes: Beaches: Cosmo’s Beach, Negril Jamaica

Located at the main entrance to Long Bay Beach Park on Negril’s famous seven-mile beach Cosmo’s is a steadfast beach favourite for anyone visiting Jamaica’s “Capital of Casual” and a great alternative to its busier counterpart for anyone looking to escape the crowds.

The beach is private so visitors need to pay a small fee to enter (about the cost of one bottle of beer). The beach is usually less crowded and attracts a mainly local crowd. Cosmo’s is comprised of three thatched bars and dining areas. Diners can sit inside or dine on outdoor tables with their feet in the sand. Both indoor and outdoor tables offer a view of the ocean. Best of all, hammocks are strung up on the beach outside the restaurant so you can sleep off your meal in the sun.

The restaurant specializes in fresh locally caught fish dishes such as fried fish and festival or steamed fish and bammy. A particular specialty is the conch which is served steamed, curried or served in soup. Lobster and shrimp dishes are also available and there is always a pot of the meat option (such as oxtail or curried goat) on the stove. The ambience, whether you opt to dine outdoors or indoors, is just great.

Sweet strains of music, reggae, soca or oldies, add that extra special touch. Visitors may choose to simply lay on the beach with a novel or a cold beer in hand but for the active traveler at Cosmo’s one simply cannot resist frolicking on the beach and the call of the watersports. Negril’s tempting waters are some of the best for snorkeling in Jamaica. With a variety of caves, coves and spectacularly colourful marine life this comes as no surprise. Various small outfits along the beach offer glass-bottom boat rides, parasailing, jet ski rides and/or snorkel trips to a nearby coral reef.
